Beyond Members

As part of the growing golf community, every golf course, club, venue, resort, destination, driving range, indoor studio, adventure golf and entertainment venue has a role to play in the evolving Golfer Experience, from elite competitive golf to social pastime or as a space for individuals to nurture their wellbeing.
The Golfer Profile Sphere, shows the current Golfer Profiles who enjoy the on course experience created and delivered by Golf Clubs, and the opportunity to build on and extend the value of the golf club network beyond the core club members to include the wider community through creating experiences which “invite people in” to experience golf in any or all of its formats.
A combination of identifying golfer profiles and leveraging data from golf club competitions and tee booking systems, will enable clubs to evolve their current golfer experience.

Golfer Profile Sphere

Every Golf Club is unique.  Every Golf Club has to find its own purpose and role in the wider golf community, be that as a community hub, with golf at its heart or as custodians for a championship course or anywhere in between.
For golf to evolve, looking beyond a clubs own membership and looking at the community of golf club members as a whole and extending the current offering to include members of other clubs and independent golfers in the golf club experience will be crucial in meeting the needs of new golfers, whose expectations lie in flexibility and being able to have a golf experience both within and beyond their own golf club.
There are a number of initiatives that clubs could look to implement to extend their golf experience beyond members:
Competitive Club Opens
Clubs can create regular weekly competitions and leagues which are open to both club members golfers and external golfers with a handicap to play together.  This creates a new route for competitive golfers with new playing opportunities and the opportunity to participate in a regular competitions at their own and other clubs.
Social Club Opens
Club opens are a key part of the golf experience, providing non-members the opportunity to play different courses, as an individual or a team, as a qualifying competition or a fun format.
A number of clubs offer open competitions for women, men and mixed players, the format is generally a full day out and mostly during the week, looking new formats and including weekends or short formats in the summer evenings will open the experience up and make it available to a to a broader range of golfer.
Local Leagues
Clubs local to one another could create a local travelling league where players have the opportunity to play a number of courses, over the summer and winter seasons, players can be part of an order of merit which gains entry to and end of season final, with the final rotating between clubs in the league each season.
Leagues can be for individuals or pairs teams and formats, creating a fun way to grow and extend the local and regional golf communities, with a view to creating regional and national playing opportunities.
County & National Governing Bodies
The national governing bodies, regional and county associations, need the support of clubs to ensure there is access to the full golf experience from entry level pay and play venues with access to championship courses, ensuring there is a rich and extensive golf experience for all golfers from beginner through to elite players.
Through supporting and engaging with governing bodies and participating in access to golf initiatives and providing access to courses for golfers to participate in county, regional and national competitions for all standards of players, clubs can play an active role in growing the game of golf.
National Club Network
Technology can support the creation of a national club network, which can provide golfers with the information and knowledge to enjoy a rich and varied golf experience based on the way they want to play and engage with golf.
Clubs could have the opportunity to identify in one or more categories, promoting the golf experience offered to club members and beyond, enhancing the over all golf community golf experience through being more transparent and open about what is on offer.
Partnerships beyond Golf Clubs
The Golf experience has extended beyond clubs, providing new partnership opportunities between clubs and driving ranges, indoor studios and short course and adventure golf facilities.
Each club has a range of golf facilities alongside the course, however to extend members experiences, partnerships with new golf experience operators could add to the value beyond the individual club member to their friends and families.

Commercial Viability

For golf to continue to grow and support current and future generations of golfer, golf clubs and venues, need to be commercially viable, which means multiple revenue streams from different golfer and customer groups, core to the majority of golf clubs are its members, their annual subscriptions and additional spend at the club.
Different clubs have a different revenue mix between member subscription, visitor fees and other revenue streams for example:
Community clubs, rely on member subscriptions to cover the majority of their operating costs and are often limited in their capital expenditure
Championship custodian courses, generally generate more revenue through visitor fees, keeping their member numbers and fees low.
Historically, club members loyalty to a club usually extended for many years,  often through multiple generations and family connections, however, new golfers will no connection to golf are joining clubs as individuals or as part of a group.  The opportunity and sometimes challenge is for a club with a long history to find pathways for new members to become part of the club and develop their lifetime loyalty to the club.
New golfers from diverse backgrounds are entering Golf, with different expectations of their golf experience, they are looking for a community to be part of, which extends beyond their club, while enjoying the value of a club community and its benefits.
Beyond members, clubs need to extend their golf experience to include a broader range of golfer and visitor to clubs, to augment their core revenue.
Member Subscription
Member subscriptions are the core revenue streams for the majority of golf clubs, with a range of memberships becoming available from full 7 day all access subsrcriptions with different fees for specific age groups, to flexible memberships where golfers can purchase credits to be used in exchange for discounted green fees.
Member subscriptions allow clubs to have a baseline income, which enable them to forward plan when it comes to operating costs and capital expenditure.  Additional income is required to develop and enhance the facilities.
Visitor Fees
Visitor Fees are an important revenue stream for all clubs, providing much needed extra income to develop and enhance the experience the club creates and delivers.
The course, its reputation, the club history and facilities all impact the fees clubs can charge visitors, often championship courses or clubs with a long history and host venues for notable events and championships, can charge higher fees due to the demand or interest in playing the course.
Each club has its own unique experience, which is often undersold when it comes to attracting visitors to the course and club.
Corporate Days
Golf clubs offer corporates the opportunity to have access to the golf club and course for business networking and employee team events, generating extra revenue from all of the clubs facilities.
Amateur Competition Host Venue
County and national governing bodies work with clubs as hosts for amateur competitions and events, often these go under the radar as neither the club nor the county or governing body promote it beyond the golfers participating in or volunteering to supporting the event.
Communicating about the involvement of clubs in supporting amateur events is key to raising the profile and building a funnel of new golfers interested in playing in events beyond their home club.
Amateur Elite Championship Host Venue
Elite Amateur Championships, at junior, amateur and senior level showcase high standards of golf, providing inspiration and role models for players at all ages and standard of golf.
Elite amateur players go largely uncelebrated in the world of golf and are key to inspiring new golfers from all backgrounds ages and abilities.
The key thing about golf is that it is possible to reach a good level of competence and appreciate the skill and enjoy watching players who are relatable and inspiring at every generation.
Clubs, counties and national governing bodies have the opportunity to build on this tremendous asset in evolving the golf experience and inspiring players of all ages to participate.
Feeder Tours for Professional Players
There are a number of feeder tours for the professional tours, which provide pathways in to a professional playing career, being a host venue for these events provide clubs with the opportunity to showcase their course, inspire their own and other local junior members to continue with their own golf journey either as an amateur, into a professional playing career or event management and marketing as a career path.
Professional Tour Host Venue
Professional Tour events have the potential to attract visitors to Golf Clubs and venues, where the venue, course and also the skills of the professional golfers can be showcased, there is a potential for clubs to create an excitement and buzz for the club, with these events and encourage all members of the club to get involved and support the event.
High Profile Professional Championship Host Venue

Volunteering
Volunteers play a significant role in grassroots sport.  Golf in England is supported by over 40,000 volunteers in clubs, counties and at events, without whom, the cost of creating and delivering the golf experience would not be cost effective.
Volunteering is a key activity which contributes to an individuals sense of “purpose”.   Purpose is recognised by The World Health Organisation, as a key element in wellness, golf provides many volunteering opportunities for people to get involved and feel valued for their contribution to a club or an event.
When reviewing the golfer experience, clubs and venues can look at each playing, volunteering and supporting opportunity as part of the overall golf experience.
