Beyond Members
As part of the growing golf community, every golf course, club, venue, resort, destination, driving range, indoor studio, adventure golf and entertainment venue has a role to play in the evolving Golfer Experience, from elite competitive golf to social pastime or as a space for individuals to nurture their wellbeing.
The Golfer Profile Sphere, shows the current Golfer Profiles who enjoy the on course experience created and delivered by Golf Clubs, and the opportunity to build on and extend the value of the golf club network beyond the core club members to include the wider community through creating experiences which “invite people in” to experience golf in any or all of its formats.
A combination of identifying golfer profiles and leveraging data from golf club competitions and tee booking systems, will enable clubs to evolve their current golfer experience.
Every Golf Club is unique. Every Golf Club has to find its own purpose and role in the wider golf community, be that as a community hub, with golf at its heart or as custodians for a championship course or anywhere in between.
For golf to evolve, looking beyond a clubs own membership and looking at the community of golf club members as a whole and extending the current offering to include members of other clubs and independent golfers in the golf club experience will be crucial in meeting the needs of new golfers, whose expectations lie in flexibility and being able to have a golf experience both within and beyond their own golf club.
There are a number of initiatives that clubs could look to implement to extend their golf experience beyond members:
Commercial Viability
For golf to continue to grow and support current and future generations of golfer, golf clubs and venues, need to be commercially viable, which means multiple revenue streams from different golfer and customer groups, core to the majority of golf clubs are its members, their annual subscriptions and additional spend at the club.
Different clubs have a different revenue mix between member subscription, visitor fees and other revenue streams for example:
Community clubs, rely on member subscriptions to cover the majority of their operating costs and are often limited in their capital expenditure
Championship custodian courses, generally generate more revenue through visitor fees, keeping their member numbers and fees low.
Historically, club members loyalty to a club usually extended for many years, often through multiple generations and family connections, however, new golfers will no connection to golf are joining clubs as individuals or as part of a group. The opportunity and sometimes challenge is for a club with a long history to find pathways for new members to become part of the club and develop their lifetime loyalty to the club.
New golfers from diverse backgrounds are entering Golf, with different expectations of their golf experience, they are looking for a community to be part of, which extends beyond their club, while enjoying the value of a club community and its benefits.
Beyond members, clubs need to extend their golf experience to include a broader range of golfer and visitor to clubs, to augment their core revenue.
When reviewing the golfer experience, clubs and venues can look at each playing, volunteering and supporting opportunity as part of the overall golf experience.
